Welcome everyone to the Topsoil Insider podcast.
00:01:29.712 --> 00:01:32.180
My name is Krista and I am your host.
00:01:32.180 --> 00:01:32.903
Today.
00:01:32.903 --> 00:01:35.969
I have the pleasure of interviewing Annette Ernie.
00:01:35.969 --> 00:01:45.487
She is the founder of the Real Housewives of Topsoil Island, and that is a real with a R-E-E-L, and I love the name so much.
00:01:45.748 --> 00:01:46.790
How are you doing, annette?
00:01:46.790 --> 00:01:47.472
I am great.
00:01:47.472 --> 00:01:49.128
Thank you so much for having me today.
00:01:49.388 --> 00:01:51.058
I just love what your organization does.
00:01:51.058 --> 00:01:53.310
Thank you, and I want more people to know about it.
00:01:53.310 --> 00:01:56.245
It's very popular already as it is Listeners.
00:01:56.245 --> 00:02:02.718
I think you're really gonna enjoy this conversation because Annette is so easy to talk to and I just I love my phone conversation.
00:02:02.718 --> 00:02:06.489
If I could have recorded that, I would have published that.
00:02:06.909 --> 00:02:07.753
It would have been perfect.
00:02:07.873 --> 00:02:10.068
But we're gonna do it again right here for the listeners.
00:02:10.088 --> 00:02:10.591
Let's do it.
00:02:11.013 --> 00:02:14.109
So tell me how you came up with that awesome name.
00:02:14.349 --> 00:02:23.045
It actually started out back in the day, everybody was watching the Real Housewives I still do, me too, and it was actually funny to me To begin with.
00:02:23.045 --> 00:02:28.455
It was all a bunch of entrepreneurs, women volunteering in their community, trying to make their communities better.
00:02:28.455 --> 00:02:36.425
So when I started this venture I thought this is it Real Housewives of Topsoil Island, even though I didn't want to copy them per se.
00:02:36.425 --> 00:02:46.985
So I decided I was Bell Like R-E-E-L, because Surf City back in the day, when I moved here over 30 years ago, was a small fishing village.
00:02:46.985 --> 00:02:50.662
So I thought I will put that together and I'll see what I can come up with.
00:02:50.662 --> 00:02:52.853
So Real Housewives of Topsoil Island is stuck.
00:02:53.194 --> 00:02:55.044
So clever yeah, I really love it.
00:02:55.063 --> 00:02:55.747
I love it too.
00:02:55.848 --> 00:02:59.502
You also you mentioned in that phone interview reeling in the family.
00:02:59.502 --> 00:03:03.903
We come here, we vacation, we hang out together and you're just reeling people in Absolutely.
00:03:04.044 --> 00:03:05.087
Love it Absolutely.
00:03:05.087 --> 00:03:07.201
So many people who want to get involved.
00:03:07.201 --> 00:03:10.700
That love to get reeled in by the Real Housewives of Topsoil Island Right.
00:03:10.782 --> 00:03:12.508
Yes, absolutely Okay.
00:03:12.508 --> 00:03:17.525
Let's talk about what it is that the Real Housewives organization does.
00:03:17.585 --> 00:03:22.424
Okay, what we actually do is we ride bicycles for families who are going through breast cancer.
00:03:22.424 --> 00:03:27.407
Starting at the south end of the island, we would ride our bicycles 26.2 miles.
00:03:27.407 --> 00:03:30.903
So I thought, okay, we'll do this for get the athletes involved as well.
00:03:30.903 --> 00:03:34.522
We decided we'd start raising money for families who are going through breast cancer.
00:03:34.522 --> 00:03:39.223
The sad thing about breast cancer is it is really a hot demon.
00:03:39.223 --> 00:03:43.022
I guess you could say some people can shake it and some people absolutely cannot.
00:03:43.022 --> 00:03:48.229
There's some people who hang on to this for 10 years, some of them who unfortunately don't come out of it all.
00:03:48.229 --> 00:04:10.495
So what we decided to do was make it accessible for them to have financial help right now, and so my goal was to help these families pay their rent, pay their mortgage, get Christmas for their children whatever they needed that money for right now, because there aren't so many families who actually lose their homes and lose everything because of this disease.
00:04:10.495 --> 00:04:12.997
So we just thought we can help them today.
00:04:12.997 --> 00:04:13.698
I love it.
00:04:13.698 --> 00:04:13.998
Yes.
00:04:14.519 --> 00:04:16.745
So tell me how it all got started.
00:04:17.307 --> 00:04:19.636
I can honestly say it was a God's sin for me.
00:04:19.636 --> 00:04:22.165
God literally laid this on my heart.
00:04:22.165 --> 00:04:27.975
I was sitting there one day and obviously I know a lot of people and I have the gift for gab.
00:04:27.975 --> 00:04:35.949
Even when I was growing up, my mother used to say all the time oh my gosh, your phone rings all the time and I'm like everybody doesn't know what we're doing this weekend.
00:04:35.949 --> 00:04:39.444
So they came up with this thing telephone, telegraph, telenet.
00:04:39.745 --> 00:04:43.384
Oh, that's funny, I get the word out about everything that's happening.
00:04:43.384 --> 00:04:43.925
Say it again.
00:04:44.187 --> 00:04:46.276
A telephone telegraph and telenet.
00:04:46.375 --> 00:04:48.562
Oh, that's so funny, so I do.
00:04:48.642 --> 00:04:51.470
I love to share everything that I enjoy.
00:04:51.470 --> 00:04:57.439
But anyway, this was laid on my heart out of the blue about my gift for gab and what I could do to give back.
00:04:57.439 --> 00:05:03.867
And God tugged on my heart and kept tugging on my heart and I was like, okay, lord, I hear you, but I don't hear you.
00:05:03.867 --> 00:05:05.492
What do you want me to do here?
00:05:05.492 --> 00:05:20.600
But I had told several of my girlfriends that I really wanted to ride my bicycle down the island, because we all go up and down this island all the time but we actually don't stop just to look at the beauty that God gives us every day on this island.
00:05:20.600 --> 00:05:27.954
So I thought if we ride our bicycle, we'll take our time and we can see everything closer to the ground, not quite as fast.
00:05:27.954 --> 00:05:29.379
So that's how it all began.
00:05:29.379 --> 00:05:31.826
And just talking with your girlfriends, talking to my girlfriends.
00:05:31.826 --> 00:05:34.283
So we decided, okay, let's do this ride.
00:05:34.283 --> 00:05:41.449
The next thing I know 42 people said we're in and we weren't even asking anybody, we were just telling them what we were doing About.
00:05:41.490 --> 00:05:49.588
42 people decided that they would ride with us and somebody spoke up that day and said, hey, why don't we do this for somebody on the island?
00:05:49.588 --> 00:05:51.283
So I said that's perfect.
00:05:51.283 --> 00:05:57.805
So I actually put it out on Facebook and said does anybody know anyone who needs some help?
00:05:57.805 --> 00:06:02.494
And so I got so many responses with a girl's name.
00:06:02.494 --> 00:06:07.612
Her name was Renee Callahan and I called Renee and she was a single mother.
00:06:07.612 --> 00:06:16.843
She was in dentistry, just like me, as a dental assistant, and I said Renee, you don't know me, but my name is Annette Ernie and I'm the founder of the Real Housewives of Topsile Island.
00:06:17.346 --> 00:06:20.779
And I said I want to make this ride all about you that day.
00:06:20.779 --> 00:06:21.783
How do you feel about it?
00:06:21.783 --> 00:06:25.577
And of course, renee broke down and cried, and cried.
00:06:25.577 --> 00:06:30.882
We decided we would get everybody who was riding a bicycle to donate 20 bucks right.
00:06:30.882 --> 00:06:37.466
A number of people had heard about this event and the end of this event was going to be held at Sears Landing.
00:06:37.466 --> 00:06:43.540
Hap Alexander used to open his doors for us all the time at Sears Landing and just say come on in, you can have your meetings here.
00:06:43.540 --> 00:06:44.423
We did.
00:06:44.423 --> 00:06:50.250
And so we rode our bicycles that day 26.2 miles and we came back to Sears Landing.
00:06:50.250 --> 00:07:08.795
And when we got to Sears Landing, we were so excited because so many people from our community came just to see if we completed the ride, I'm sure, but they were also willing to give, and Renee Callahan, her son, jeffrey, came and we ended up raising $2,800 for them on that day.
00:07:08.925 --> 00:07:14.394
On the first ride and, to be honest with you, I thought, wow, that's a lot of money.
00:07:14.394 --> 00:07:15.389
That was awesome.
00:07:15.389 --> 00:07:21.033
And shortly after that another friend, rhonda Jones, was diagnosed with cancer.
00:07:21.033 --> 00:07:23.512
So we thought, okay, let's do this again.
00:07:23.512 --> 00:07:32.132
So we rode probably I'm gonna say probably six to eight months later we did it again and we raised $8,000 that day.
00:07:32.132 --> 00:07:36.271
Oh, my gosh, that's a big jump, big jump, and God bless Rhonda.
00:07:36.271 --> 00:07:38.651
We lost Rhonda to her battle of cancer.
00:07:38.651 --> 00:07:41.733
I'm sorry to hear that, I am too, and we just miss her so much.
00:07:41.733 --> 00:07:43.552
She was such an inspiration to this island.
00:07:43.552 --> 00:07:45.584
But we raised $8,000.
00:07:45.584 --> 00:07:54.471
So then we thought, okay, we can't do this every month, we just need to start doing something once a year and just make it a huge event.
00:07:54.865 --> 00:07:55.649
So that's what we did.
00:07:55.649 --> 00:08:00.115
We have been blessed by this community to the nth degree.
00:08:00.115 --> 00:08:07.934
It is not one business owner has ever told me no about having an event at their establishment.
00:08:07.934 --> 00:08:11.194
Shuck and Shack, I mean gill against there.
00:08:11.194 --> 00:08:14.091
I mean there's nobody who's ever said no, you can't have a sign up here.
00:08:14.091 --> 00:08:17.173
We do four registrations before each ride.
00:08:17.173 --> 00:08:20.692
I saw that, yeah, which gives a lot of the businesses.
00:08:20.692 --> 00:08:25.550
Number one we wanted to make sure our businesses were taken care of after the season.
00:08:25.550 --> 00:08:31.771
Oh yeah, so we always try to do something after the season's over so they can stay running and working all year long.
00:08:31.771 --> 00:08:32.212
Nice.
00:08:32.273 --> 00:08:33.315
Yes, very good idea.
00:08:34.404 --> 00:08:35.991
Of course now they're busy all year long.
00:08:36.144 --> 00:08:38.312
Things have changed around here a little bit in that regard.
00:08:38.384 --> 00:08:39.529
Changed dramatically?
00:08:39.529 --> 00:08:43.431
They have, so we do four registrations and it's been very successful.
00:08:43.431 --> 00:08:49.955
Each establishment always hires live entertainment, so it keeps all of our people there all day long.
00:08:49.955 --> 00:08:52.373
We sell all of our swag that day.
00:08:52.373 --> 00:08:55.289
This is the registrations, all the registrations.
00:08:55.289 --> 00:08:59.615
Yes, we do that, probably about a month out before the bike ride.
00:08:59.784 --> 00:09:03.753
So we go ahead and talk about those Sure let's talk about them, absolutely Okay.
00:09:04.485 --> 00:09:08.672
So this year, starting August 26th, surf City Line is gonna do the kickoff for us.
00:09:08.672 --> 00:09:11.250
Okay, so we'll have registration from one o'clock until four.
00:09:11.250 --> 00:09:18.669
Then on September 9th, the Beach Bumps Pizza and Grill that is actually at the north end of the island They'll be doing their kickoff too.
00:09:18.669 --> 00:09:19.251
One to four.
00:09:19.251 --> 00:09:26.091
September 23rd is the trailer bar, who has been there from day one, and then September 30th the Shuck and Shack.
00:09:26.091 --> 00:09:33.214
Okay, they're all from one o'clock until four o'clock, all right, and just so you know, every establishment always has live entertainment for us.
00:09:33.214 --> 00:09:37.932
They also have their restaurants and bars open, so that's our way of giving back to them.
00:09:37.932 --> 00:09:46.471
So people who do come and register usually hang out and listen to some great music, have cocktails, have food and just enjoy a day of celebration.
00:09:46.471 --> 00:09:47.111
I love it.
00:09:47.111 --> 00:09:47.894
That's so great.
00:09:47.953 --> 00:09:51.386
It is great, so let's go to that annual bike ride that you're having.
00:09:51.386 --> 00:09:55.447
This year it happens to be on Saturday, october 7th, it's what?
00:09:55.447 --> 00:09:57.354
The first Saturday of every October?
00:09:57.354 --> 00:09:57.927
Is that how you?
00:09:57.967 --> 00:10:00.009
plan that we used to do it in April actually.
00:10:00.009 --> 00:10:13.212
Oh, okay, covid changed things for us, yeah, and so then the town actually told us what was available after COVID, restrictions were lifted and so October was perfect, because it's actually breast cancer awareness month.
00:10:13.212 --> 00:10:15.284
Oh, we're gonna stick with October forever.
00:10:15.284 --> 00:10:17.149
It's usually the first Saturday in October.
00:10:17.149 --> 00:10:18.153
Okay, absolutely.
00:10:21.212 --> 00:10:22.870
All right, so let's talk about that bike ride.
00:10:22.870 --> 00:10:23.966
Where does it start?
00:10:23.966 --> 00:10:25.149
What's the route?
00:10:25.149 --> 00:10:25.831
Where does it go?
00:10:25.831 --> 00:10:27.054
What time All?
00:10:27.095 --> 00:10:27.657
those good things.
00:10:27.657 --> 00:10:38.532
We do a beautiful opening ceremony and this is to honor all of our survivors and their families, because breast cancer is a family disease, so we get everybody in the circles.
00:10:38.532 --> 00:10:50.953
We have all of our survivors come and their families and we all hold hands around them and we usually have our mayor say a prayer for everybody that day to thank their family members and to pray around them all.
00:10:50.953 --> 00:10:53.513
The bike ride actually starts at nine o'clock.
00:10:53.513 --> 00:10:55.150
The opening ceremony started eight.
00:10:55.150 --> 00:10:57.371
We leave Soundside Park at nine o'clock.
00:10:57.371 --> 00:11:09.087
We ride down to the St Regis, turn around and come all the way back and there's numerous businesses that sponsor water stops all the way down the island, so you can never get thirsty, that's for sure.
00:11:09.565 --> 00:11:11.551
All right, I got a real question right here.
00:11:11.551 --> 00:11:15.212
As someone who is not very active.
00:11:15.212 --> 00:11:16.749
How hard is that ride?
00:11:17.345 --> 00:11:17.927
I've been doing.
00:11:17.927 --> 00:11:20.394
I've ridden every ride and I'm 63.
00:11:20.394 --> 00:11:21.316
I'll be 63.
00:11:21.316 --> 00:11:38.714
So I've ridden every single ride and there's days that is pouring down rain, there's days that the wind shifts and it turns on you and even, like the morning of the bike ride, my phone usually starts blowing up at six o'clock in the morning If it's raining, which it has rained tons of times, really.
00:11:38.714 --> 00:11:41.065
Yeah, and everybody's hey, annette, are we riding today?
00:11:41.065 --> 00:11:43.292
And I'm like did breast cancer stop or something?
00:11:43.292 --> 00:11:45.831
Cause these girls never, get a break.
00:11:45.945 --> 00:11:48.272
So I think a little bit of rain is fine with us today.
00:11:48.272 --> 00:11:49.195
I love that.
00:11:49.195 --> 00:11:59.551
So we have never stopped a bike ride so we have had to stop before because lightning and thunder has been so bad that we were like, okay, we better take cover for a minute.
00:11:59.551 --> 00:12:05.130
But we always complete that ride and I tell people all the time they ask me, annette, what if I don't complete the ride?
00:12:05.130 --> 00:12:08.890
I said I don't care, I got your money and that's all those women need.
00:12:08.890 --> 00:12:09.393
Is somebody.
00:12:09.865 --> 00:12:11.931
We need your money so we can have these families.
00:12:11.931 --> 00:12:15.311
All right, that makes me feel a little bit better, like I'm thinking about it.
00:12:15.311 --> 00:12:17.392
I'm like wow, that sounds like a really long ride.
00:12:18.768 --> 00:12:28.989
It is a long ride, but my granddaughter started this journey with me when she was probably eight and she is now 14 and she has ridden that ride, but I'll never forget one day.
00:12:28.989 --> 00:12:46.352
We were on our way back and her dad, my son Kane, is the logistics guy, so he has his crew, which my husband started with lighthouse marine construction from the very beginning, and they are always on the road in case anybody breaks down or they need to go back or if they just need to stall.
00:12:46.845 --> 00:12:47.769
Or if they have a flat tire.
00:12:47.769 --> 00:12:51.250
So they always pick everybody up who needs help or assistance.
00:12:51.250 --> 00:12:53.472
So there is somebody out there to help them at all times.
00:12:53.472 --> 00:12:57.613
But my granddaughter was peddling she's Gigi, how much further?
00:12:57.613 --> 00:13:00.559
And I was like see that yellow house way up there.
00:13:00.559 --> 00:13:03.211
She'd say yeah, and I was like it's further than that.
00:13:03.211 --> 00:13:05.452
I said Kane, it's okay.
00:13:05.452 --> 00:13:09.412
I said your dad is right behind us, you can get in his truck at any time.
00:13:09.412 --> 00:13:14.672
And she'd turn around and see him and she'd just pedal even harder, trying to know she was not giving up.
00:13:14.672 --> 00:13:15.695
So she never gave up?
00:13:15.725 --> 00:13:17.250
Did she make it all the way through?
00:13:17.250 --> 00:13:17.851
How about that Every?
00:13:17.871 --> 00:13:18.273
single time.
00:13:18.273 --> 00:13:20.952
And her little legs, they were so worn out.
00:13:20.952 --> 00:13:23.292
Kane said that she was asleep by the time they got home.
00:13:23.292 --> 00:13:25.549
Baby girl, yeah, sweet baby girl.
00:13:26.105 --> 00:13:32.626
But our bike ride does start at nine o'clock and it usually takes us probably two to three hours to ride that ride.
00:13:32.626 --> 00:13:34.129
If people are stopping to talk it.
00:13:34.129 --> 00:13:49.500
And I tell everybody all the time, this is not a race, this is a ride to enjoy the beauty that God really puts around us, that we take for granted every day that beautiful ocean, the intercoastal, so pretty, and you get to see all of that as you're riding.
00:13:49.500 --> 00:13:57.575
Then we finish up the ride and this year JM's on the water is hosting lunch for everybody and then we do a live auction and we do a silent auction.
00:13:57.575 --> 00:14:06.907
Now, my live auction is just wild.
00:14:06.907 --> 00:14:11.854
It becomes a bidding war and it's hysterical.
00:14:11.854 --> 00:14:12.695
It's hysterical.
00:14:12.754 --> 00:14:22.302
We have Gail Brent and Dale Pollart where the funniest two that I've ever seen at our event they get into bidding wars.
00:14:22.302 --> 00:14:34.076
Last year, andy Darden and his wife Leslie they owned Darden Farms in Clinton Anyway, they were here and one of my lovely girlfriends, tiffany, her mother passed with breast cancer.
00:14:34.076 --> 00:14:37.885
Tiffany is one of my big supporters and I just adore her.
00:14:37.885 --> 00:14:45.251
Tiffany and Andy got into this bidding war on this Tiki Tour and it went on and on.
00:14:45.251 --> 00:14:53.207
I finally the bid got up to $8,000 and I thought incredible I think the Tiki Tour usually is like $500 a night.
00:14:53.207 --> 00:14:55.000
It went up to $8,000.
00:14:55.159 --> 00:14:58.971
So Tiki Tours donates a tour for this live auction.
00:14:59.030 --> 00:15:05.575
They have donated a tour for us for the last couple years and it has brought in so much money for the Real Housewives.
00:15:05.615 --> 00:15:07.120
That's amazing it is amazing.
00:15:07.160 --> 00:15:13.201
But the year before last the Darden's actually bought it and I think they paid a couple thousand dollars for it.
00:15:13.201 --> 00:15:25.303
This year A friend of mine, tiffany, who's like I said her mother had passed from breast cancer and this is very near and dear to her heart she was like not seeing exactly who was bidding and we're all Bester friends.
00:15:25.303 --> 00:15:30.399
She's sitting there bidding and Andy Darden is over there just raising his hand.
00:15:30.399 --> 00:15:31.222
Oh, that's funny.
00:15:31.222 --> 00:15:33.275
So nobody knew who was actually bidding.
00:15:33.275 --> 00:15:49.159
I'm up the front with our auctioneer and I finally walk over to Tiffany and I said Tiffany, you're bidding against us because our whole group had gone last year, so the Darden's had won it last year and so we did a theme party.
00:15:49.159 --> 00:15:54.035
So last year we did a theme party and we did a 70s party.
00:15:54.035 --> 00:16:08.149
So all of us dressed up like the 70s and there was a group of 40 of us I'm probably mistaken and my husband, daryl, sings in a band and Ernie McAllister is also a performer on the island, so they were our entertainment on the Tiki Tour which was fantastic.
00:16:08.509 --> 00:16:12.861
So we had a big party going on and everybody was dressed like the 70s and it was hysterical.
00:16:13.003 --> 00:16:18.066
So how big is this Tiki Tour boat that you guys can all get 40 people on there?
00:16:18.066 --> 00:16:19.311
It fits 42 people.
00:16:19.311 --> 00:16:19.974
That's incredible.
00:16:19.974 --> 00:16:21.719
I did not know that their boats were that large.
00:16:21.719 --> 00:16:23.664
They go up and down the island all day long.
00:16:23.664 --> 00:16:25.807
I'm going to have to go set up an interview with them.
00:16:25.875 --> 00:16:29.937
You really should, but I have to say that's just one of the many things that we get donated.
00:16:29.937 --> 00:16:33.125
That Tiki Tour was outstanding, but I've had painting.
00:16:33.125 --> 00:16:45.254
Jeff Wetzel, who is now the mayor in Collin Ridge, donated one of his prints, as a matter of fact, that is one of the most amazing prints that I've ever seen and he sold that for $750 and at my event I think it went for $5,000.
00:16:46.075 --> 00:16:46.957
That's incredible.
00:16:46.957 --> 00:16:58.344
And then Jeff was holding the picture and he was like, and there was two people and it was again Dale Pollard and Gail Brent bidding against this and Jeff said, let's do another, I'll give another one.
00:16:58.464 --> 00:16:59.888
And you guys both pay the same.
00:17:00.154 --> 00:17:02.019
Everybody on this entire island.
00:17:02.019 --> 00:17:03.703
They're just all wanting to give back.
00:17:03.703 --> 00:17:10.347
Everybody can't give that kind of money, but everybody shows up every year and they give from their heart.
00:17:13.336 --> 00:17:19.298
I'm really learning as I do these interviews and I hear about the way that the businesses are giving back to the community.
00:17:19.298 --> 00:17:25.162
It's a really beautiful thing and I was not fully aware of how generous the businesses around here are.
00:17:25.162 --> 00:17:25.942
Oh my gosh.
00:17:25.942 --> 00:17:27.527
Yeah, it's pretty incredible to learn.
00:17:28.335 --> 00:17:32.788
We absolutely could not do it at all without our community.
00:17:33.089 --> 00:17:39.144
There's no way, and with our business partners on this island, they have never said no to us for anything.
00:17:39.144 --> 00:17:41.157
I love hearing that about where I live.
00:17:41.157 --> 00:17:44.109
Yeah, and it's so funny because we were all at.
00:17:44.109 --> 00:17:47.080
It's called the Ladies Connect in Hampstead and what it is.
