00:02:55.001 --> 00:02:58.030
Hello everyone and welcome to Topsail Insider.
00:02:58.030 --> 00:03:00.676
My name is Krista and I am your host.
00:03:00.676 --> 00:03:01.439
Today.
00:03:01.439 --> 00:03:03.229
We are talking to Jill Schiffelbein.
00:03:03.229 --> 00:03:12.633
She sits on the board of directors of the Salty Turtle Cycling Club and is also the chairperson for the annual Haunted 100 Bike Ride.
00:03:12.633 --> 00:03:14.852
Welcome, jill, and thank you so much for joining me today.
00:03:14.852 --> 00:03:16.038
I am so thrilled to be here.
00:03:16.038 --> 00:03:16.762
Thanks for having me.
00:03:16.762 --> 00:03:17.664
Yeah, my pleasure.
00:03:18.127 --> 00:03:20.414
Before we dive into today's episode.
00:03:20.414 --> 00:03:28.954
I want to just take a moment and introduce anyone who's new to the area, or those planning a vacation to the Topsail area soon, to one of our local gyms.
00:03:28.954 --> 00:03:30.888
It's called Salty Turtle Beer Company.
00:03:30.888 --> 00:03:34.251
It's located on Triton Lane in Surf City, north Carolina.
00:03:34.251 --> 00:03:38.912
It's veteran owned and operated and a real community favorite.
00:03:38.912 --> 00:03:50.611
It offers a very laid back atmosphere, they offer creative brews, they host awesome food trucks and they are dedicated to supporting a lot of local causes like turtles, pets, vets and food pantries.
00:03:50.611 --> 00:03:55.007
It is also Pender County's first brewery, which opened in 2017.
00:03:55.007 --> 00:04:03.048
They also host two clubs, the Run Club and the Cycling Club, and we're going to talk today about the latter.
00:04:03.048 --> 00:04:11.772
So, jill, how did you learn of and join the Salty Turtle Cycling Club, and then just tell us what you enjoy most about being a member?
00:04:12.662 --> 00:04:14.307
I learned about it by drinking beer.
00:04:15.300 --> 00:04:16.786
Somehow I knew you were going to say that.
00:04:16.786 --> 00:04:17.701
Of course I mean.
00:04:18.223 --> 00:04:19.788
I cycle so I can drink beer.
00:04:19.788 --> 00:04:22.346
That's what most of us do, I mean not really, I love cycling.
00:04:23.521 --> 00:04:29.108
I earn my reward Right, but no, I learned about it just going to the brewery when I first moved here.
00:04:29.108 --> 00:04:54.901
I bought my place on the island in November of 2020 and in February of 2021 became a full-time resident and shortly after that I'd gone up to the brewery a couple of times and I saw on their walls they have signs for cycling club and I'm thinking I should really get back into cycling, because in a previous life I was really into triathlons, did Ironman and all that type of stuff 100 mile races, yada, yada, yada and thought you know, maybe it's about time to pick that back up.
00:04:55.023 --> 00:04:57.975
So went and got a bike in April of 2021, got involved.
00:04:58.154 --> 00:05:04.971
You have this amazing professional background, which we will touch on much later, but now you're this incredible athlete too, with triathlons.
00:05:05.052 --> 00:05:05.512
Come on.
00:05:05.512 --> 00:05:07.778
Oh, I was, that was previous life, previous life.
00:05:07.778 --> 00:05:09.261
You're not getting me running right now.
00:05:09.261 --> 00:05:12.548
My knees, four knee surgeries later, my knees do not do that.
00:05:12.548 --> 00:05:14.132
But cycling is great.
00:05:14.620 --> 00:05:16.589
I was talking to my husband about the cycling club.
00:05:16.589 --> 00:05:20.466
He loves brews and he loves cycling, but it's been a while If he loves turtles too.
00:05:20.485 --> 00:05:25.521
our slogan is ride bikes, drink beer save turtles.
00:05:25.540 --> 00:05:26.242
We have a trifecta going on here.
00:05:26.242 --> 00:05:26.442
I love it.
00:05:26.442 --> 00:05:29.569
Do you know the story behind the founding of the Salty Turtle Cycling Club?
00:05:29.569 --> 00:05:32.708
Who came up with the idea and did it just take off right away?
00:05:33.220 --> 00:05:38.701
I don't have the full story and I could say some salacious things that my fellow board members would laugh at.
00:05:38.701 --> 00:05:42.389
But the real story as I know it is, there are a few people who are also on the board.
00:05:42.389 --> 00:05:45.394
Hayden Frost is our president, dale Steele is our treasurer.
00:05:45.394 --> 00:05:57.944
Dan McDonald and Brad Pfeiffer are also in the area, also on the board with me, and Hayden and Dale met coincidentally when Hayden was looking for a house with his wife, chris, and him and Dale.
00:05:57.944 --> 00:06:03.374
Both are wearing the same exact biking shirt from an event in Iowa.
00:06:03.374 --> 00:06:05.005
Oh no, way.
00:06:06.480 --> 00:06:10.550
Rag ride, which is actually literally happening this week, right now, where you ride for seven days across the state of Iowa.
00:06:10.550 --> 00:06:12.221
And so it was their sign.
00:06:12.221 --> 00:06:14.026
They're like this is our neighborhood, this is our town.
00:06:14.026 --> 00:06:14.970
We were meant to live here.
00:06:15.120 --> 00:06:15.862
Yeah, that's incredible.
00:06:16.023 --> 00:06:28.725
They hung out, they would cycle and they'd be up having beers and eventually talked with one of the owners, Dan Callender, who also rides, and a club was formed and that was September 2020.
00:06:28.725 --> 00:06:33.144
So people are really just starting to get back out again and let's, you know, let's get something in.
00:06:33.144 --> 00:06:37.192
And I came into the picture in April of 2021.
00:06:37.192 --> 00:06:40.764
And there wasn't an official board or anything like that right away.
00:06:41.485 --> 00:06:44.630
The nonprofit 501c7, I believe it is.
00:06:44.630 --> 00:07:04.612
It's like a not-for-profit social entity, so we don't get taxed as long as we are not making profit, which is why we make sure, of course, that all of our proceeds from everything we do support any administrative logistics for the club Because, as you can imagine, cycling, like most sports, require insurance in some way, shape or form.
00:07:04.612 --> 00:07:07.565
But with cycling there's a lot of things to consider.
00:07:07.565 --> 00:07:09.290
I know we'll talk about safety a little bit today.
00:07:09.290 --> 00:07:11.483
Yeah for sure, there's some good and bad things about that.
00:07:11.483 --> 00:07:13.949
We decided it was probably good.
00:07:13.949 --> 00:07:18.850
We are growing to a few dozen people that were showing up regularly and we thought we should protect ourselves.
00:07:18.850 --> 00:07:30.990
And so we decided to do this and form the entity and have not only the business structure behind it but also being able to apply for insurance for the club and things like that.
00:07:31.089 --> 00:07:32.653
Gotcha, you sit on the board.
00:07:32.899 --> 00:07:36.103
You're also the secretary, so I'm the secretary of the board.
00:07:36.103 --> 00:07:40.754
And then Haunted 100, which is our now annual public bike ride.
00:07:40.754 --> 00:07:43.550
Again, 100% of proceeds benefiting the sea turtles.
00:07:43.550 --> 00:07:45.927
That is what I'm chairperson of.
00:07:46.699 --> 00:07:48.384
What are some of the benefits of joining the club?
00:07:48.384 --> 00:07:51.505
What kind of activities and events does the cycling club organize?
00:07:52.269 --> 00:07:53.333
We do a lot of different things.
00:07:53.333 --> 00:07:57.146
We have our standard Sunday ride and this is how I joined.
00:07:57.146 --> 00:08:14.201
It's 10 am every Sunday, although right now we are starting at 830 because the traffic I mean with all our beaches being named some of the best beaches we keep getting more and more tourist traffic and so, as a board we decided in the summers, we're now moving the ride to 830 instead of 10, just because it's a little safer for everyone involved.
00:08:14.240 --> 00:08:17.427
And safety is huge for us, so we do that.
00:08:17.427 --> 00:08:25.447
But most of the year it's 10am and you can find out exactly when that switches over on our Facebook group and, of course, at the brewery too, they have that information.
00:08:25.447 --> 00:08:28.872
But really, you come out, you can ride.
00:08:28.872 --> 00:08:30.035
We do a 20 mile route.
00:08:30.035 --> 00:08:34.428
We leave and return from Salty Turtle Do you have the same route each week.
00:08:34.469 --> 00:08:35.070
We do, you do.
00:08:35.070 --> 00:08:37.062
Okay, same exact route each week.
00:08:37.101 --> 00:08:38.746
It's 20 miles and we like to do it.
00:08:38.746 --> 00:08:42.403
We like to keep it consistent, One for locals who live in the area too.
00:08:42.403 --> 00:08:43.424
They'll see us every Sunday.
00:08:43.424 --> 00:08:48.573
Some people know if they know members of the club, they'll stand outside and wave, or sit on a balcony or stuff.
00:08:48.614 --> 00:08:50.470
It makes it fun, but it's also just.
00:08:50.470 --> 00:08:56.951
It makes it consistent and it also is good because sometimes we have members who are not here full time, as a lot of people are not.
00:08:56.951 --> 00:09:09.456
People come in and out and it's nice to have that consistency because if people get lost there's always a standard regroup points and we do communicate about a lot of things before every single ride, including safety procedures and group riding safety etc.
00:09:09.456 --> 00:09:11.582
We just like to keep that consistent.
00:09:11.582 --> 00:09:14.330
However, the club does have.
00:09:14.330 --> 00:09:15.812
Brad is our.
00:09:15.812 --> 00:09:23.860
We call him the chair of non official Sunday rides and so once or twice a week there will be these rides posted.
00:09:23.860 --> 00:09:30.469
Wednesdays we do a ride from Ironclad Shaka Taco yeah, and ride around this area and it's nice.
00:09:30.469 --> 00:09:34.904
And sometimes there are Saturday rides and sometimes we'll do gravel rides and we mix it up.
00:09:34.904 --> 00:09:39.091
And anyone on the Facebook group we have 400 plus people on the Facebook group.
00:09:39.150 --> 00:09:39.432
Oh, wow.
00:09:39.519 --> 00:09:44.071
You don't have to be a member to be on the Facebook group, but it is a private group because we don't want the spam to come in.
00:09:44.071 --> 00:09:46.196
But anyone can post a ride anytime.
00:09:46.196 --> 00:09:51.615
We just have a member who's training for Ironman right now and says hey, september 8th, I need to get a hundred mile ride in.
00:09:51.615 --> 00:09:53.241
Anyone interested in joining?
00:09:53.501 --> 00:09:53.802
Okay.
00:09:54.083 --> 00:09:54.946
Boom People sign up.
00:09:55.106 --> 00:09:55.828
I love that.
00:09:55.828 --> 00:09:57.091
It's very supportive.
00:09:57.600 --> 00:10:05.553
It is a supportive community and we formalized membership right and directly to the question you asked, because I get so excited talking about our community.
00:10:05.553 --> 00:10:06.075
I love it.
00:10:06.075 --> 00:10:13.010
We decided to have the membership because as a member we can provide different insurance benefits for the group rides and everything like that, which is good.
00:10:13.010 --> 00:10:14.702
It just keeps all of us a little safer.
00:10:14.702 --> 00:10:21.222
But we also then have just kind of more of a standing within the community right, we can contribute to it.
00:10:21.222 --> 00:10:26.149
So it's only $20 a year to be a member and you get discounts at area businesses, so reasonable.
00:10:26.269 --> 00:10:29.855
Yeah, 15% off of merch at Salty Turtle, oh my gosh, that's great.
00:10:29.855 --> 00:10:32.469
That alone may save people more than $20 in a year.
00:10:32.469 --> 00:10:37.846
Right, but like other area businesses, sundial gives us discounts on some coffee and tea.
00:10:37.846 --> 00:10:40.692
Salt Marsh, on Sundays, gives us discounts, so cool.
00:10:40.692 --> 00:10:49.735
It's just a really great way to involve the community, and now that Top Soul Surf and Cycle is also right across the Surf City Bridge, they're a sponsor and great people too.
00:10:50.580 --> 00:10:51.745
What about what you do?
00:10:51.904 --> 00:10:55.388
after a ride you act like riding isn't enough in and of itself.
00:10:55.388 --> 00:10:58.087
Of course, after the ride is the best part.
00:10:58.087 --> 00:11:01.561
You know you've earned the reward, so after the ride.
00:11:01.581 --> 00:11:05.488
Do you guys all sit down at the Salty Turtle and enjoy some beer and hang out and have fun?
00:11:05.628 --> 00:11:07.951
We do, I love it Every Sunday, every Sunday.
00:11:07.951 --> 00:11:18.461
And what's great is, if you, the community, is built up so well now, and when we say we welcome riders of all levels, right, people are like well, what does that really mean?
00:11:18.522 --> 00:11:19.503
I wanted to ask you about that.
00:11:19.543 --> 00:11:22.306
Yeah, yeah so let me go into that first before we get social right.
00:11:22.306 --> 00:11:23.067
Sure, logistics.
00:11:23.067 --> 00:11:31.716
It's a 20-mile ride, so if you're not comfortable riding 10 miles on your own on the road, it's probably not where you should start.
00:11:31.716 --> 00:11:34.227
However, join the Facebook group.
00:11:34.227 --> 00:11:35.986
Say I want to get into cycling.
00:11:35.986 --> 00:11:37.745
Here's where I'm at.
00:11:37.745 --> 00:11:39.687
Is anyone willing to help guide me?
00:11:39.687 --> 00:11:42.690
And you will have people jumping on board to help guide you.
00:11:42.690 --> 00:11:43.201
That's great.
00:11:43.201 --> 00:11:44.384
You will have people jumping on board to help guide you.
00:11:44.384 --> 00:11:47.635
You will have some people say don't go over the bridge, you're new, just ride on the flat island.
00:11:47.635 --> 00:11:50.563
I will meet you on the island and start the ride with you there instead.
00:11:50.563 --> 00:11:52.467
And you have to.
00:11:52.467 --> 00:11:56.302
Mandatory if you ride with us must wear a helmet.
00:11:56.302 --> 00:11:59.229
Zero tolerance policy for non-helmets.
00:11:59.229 --> 00:12:02.543
We will not let you out in the group with us, period, if you don't have a helmet.
00:12:03.205 --> 00:12:06.692
How many members do you have in the club and how do you become a member?
00:12:07.259 --> 00:12:08.221
Yeah, to become a member.
00:12:08.221 --> 00:12:12.740
We have a link to a site that runs through an organization called Racklet.
00:12:12.740 --> 00:12:16.201
It's a software program that helps us keep track of membership, ticket, events, that type of thing.
00:12:16.201 --> 00:12:26.765
But we have a site through there you become a member, you come to an event, you're going to get a scan of QR code and and get to figure it out.
00:12:26.765 --> 00:12:27.408
We make it as easy as possible.
00:12:27.408 --> 00:12:28.472
You don't have to become a member to ride with us.
00:12:28.494 --> 00:12:30.581
We prefer you do, of course right, but you don't have to become a member.
00:12:30.581 --> 00:12:34.351
We genuinely do welcome cyclists and make it a big community thing.
00:12:34.659 --> 00:12:35.523
But why wouldn't you?
00:12:35.523 --> 00:12:37.909
Because you get the benefit of being in the insurance.
00:12:38.559 --> 00:12:40.745
Yeah, I mean, which is a huge benefit.
00:12:40.745 --> 00:12:48.200
Right, there are some people we have some people who ride with us that are USA Cycling members which is like $150 a year or something and that covers their ride insurance.
00:12:48.379 --> 00:12:49.687
And I'm like, okay, you don't want to pay?
00:12:49.726 --> 00:12:50.731
an additional $20.
00:12:50.731 --> 00:12:55.884
That's fine and there's reasons why people would or wouldn't and we're not going to do that, but we try.
00:12:55.884 --> 00:12:59.466
If you come more than a few times, join us so we can get in.
00:12:59.466 --> 00:13:02.269
If there's announcements, we can make sure you're informed on the information.
00:13:02.269 --> 00:13:08.176
And to answer your question on members, we have I think the exact town is 123 paid members right now.
00:13:08.556 --> 00:13:09.456
What are the membership fees?
00:13:09.456 --> 00:13:13.450
You said it's $20 a year, yep, and it covers the insurance.
00:13:13.470 --> 00:13:14.860
Mm-hmm, you get the insurance Anything else.
00:13:14.860 --> 00:13:25.471
You get the insurance and then discounts at local places, Gotcha, so from different food merchandise services, discounts that type of thing, and you're helping us cover the administrative costs.
00:13:25.471 --> 00:13:28.615
So we can, of course, be this 501c7 and make the donations we do.
00:13:33.860 --> 00:13:35.784
Perfect what age groups are represented in your memberships and also, is there an age minimum to?
00:13:35.825 --> 00:13:36.086
join the club.
00:13:36.086 --> 00:13:37.690
That's a really, really great question.
00:13:37.690 --> 00:13:39.841
Legally, from insurance it's 18 and up.
00:13:39.841 --> 00:13:41.644
You have to be a legal adult to be a rider.
00:13:41.644 --> 00:13:49.852
We do have some families that will come with younger kids, teenage kids who are active in cycling communities.
00:13:49.852 --> 00:13:53.725
We have some like award-winning youth marathon triathletes.
00:13:53.804 --> 00:13:54.225
Oh yeah.
00:13:54.385 --> 00:14:06.081
It's great, but there's the separate process for all of that and it's something just to communicate and give us a heads up beforehand if that's going to happen, because we want to make sure we don't invalidate insurance or anything.
00:14:06.123 --> 00:14:06.904
Yeah, right.
00:14:07.065 --> 00:14:07.886
That makes sense, yeah.
00:14:07.886 --> 00:14:19.148
But believe me, the families for the after part, the socialization part, even the spouses who don't ride friends who don't ride my parents, when they come into town I bring them out with us.
00:14:19.148 --> 00:14:20.250
It's fun we have.
00:14:20.250 --> 00:14:23.645
We had our first like cycling club baby not too long ago.
00:14:23.645 --> 00:14:26.010
She just turned a year old Like it was great.
00:14:26.010 --> 00:14:26.613
That's so cool.
00:14:27.340 --> 00:14:28.846
What other activities are you doing?
00:14:28.846 --> 00:14:30.606
What other events are you organizing with the club?
00:14:30.899 --> 00:14:33.789
I know we'll talk about Haunted 100, because that's one of the big things here today.
00:14:34.039 --> 00:14:35.866
So I will table that one for now.
00:14:35.866 --> 00:14:41.927
But we do, you know, in addition to socializing after the rides, just such an active community.
00:14:41.927 --> 00:14:54.528
If somebody we had last year, somebody from our club was dancing in the stars for Onslow County and so we got a group of people from the club together, purchased a table and supported right, and so it's just again.
00:14:54.528 --> 00:15:09.966
It's genuinely a community and I've lived a lot of different places and a lot of people in this area have lived a lot of different places and most people, once they find this club, they just feel like they're home because there's something for everyone, there's an age group for everyone, and it's so nice.
00:15:09.966 --> 00:15:11.025
So we have gotten.
00:15:11.067 --> 00:15:14.688
This year we actually started doing an official quarterly potluck.
00:15:14.688 --> 00:15:19.511
It sounds so simple, but, oh my gosh, after the rides we're all hungry and thirsty anyway.
00:15:19.511 --> 00:15:27.897
And so once a quarter we have potluck and, like one of our members is I'm talking like top in the country bakery level sourdough guy.
00:15:27.897 --> 00:15:37.525
Shout out to you Michael Makes like the best sourdough bread and he joined us within this past year and he brought that bread once and we're all like you have to stay.
00:15:38.860 --> 00:15:40.701
And bring that bread every single potluck Every time.
00:15:40.701 --> 00:15:41.302
It's amazing.
00:15:41.701 --> 00:15:42.342
But there's people.
00:15:42.342 --> 00:15:45.184
We have a guy who used to own a barbecue company.
00:15:45.184 --> 00:15:47.927
You know the company shut down, but once a year he'll do different things.
00:15:47.927 --> 00:15:52.150
It's just fun, and you get to know people outside of the ride.
00:15:52.150 --> 00:15:59.976
The challenge is, though, we all look very different in our bike kits, with our helmets on and so sometimes you don't recognize people when you're out just living normal life.
00:16:02.880 --> 00:16:04.283
I wanted to know the age range within the club.
00:16:04.283 --> 00:16:05.344
Is it like 18 to 80?
00:16:05.384 --> 00:16:12.293
I think we probably, I know for sure we have 60s, we might have 70s, we might even have 80s.
00:16:12.293 --> 00:16:19.585
Really, yeah, and we have 18, you know, barely barely out of high school.
00:16:19.585 --> 00:16:27.809
And it's really cool also, I think, to see, especially now, people in all generations, maybe a part of three or four generations of people writing and socializing and being in community together.
00:16:27.809 --> 00:16:32.873
Yeah, we just had some members shout outs to you misty and rob I'm going to make sure you hear this episode.
00:16:32.873 --> 00:16:38.980
Rob got stationed in okinawa and they left and they were very, very involved in the club and volunteering and everything.
00:16:38.980 --> 00:16:46.494
Everything we do is 100 volunteer run and driven, so we don't have any administrative staff or anything like that.
00:16:46.600 --> 00:16:52.244
So, it's all labors of love for those of us in the community, but it's like when people move away we throw a big old goodbye.
00:16:52.244 --> 00:17:01.020
Away parties Going away not goodbye, going away, coming back, ride and after party and everything, and it's people come and they go, but most of them come back and it's really great.
00:17:01.341 --> 00:17:02.965
I don't even ride and I want to join your club.
00:17:02.965 --> 00:17:04.188
Come on over, right?
00:17:04.208 --> 00:17:05.590
You don't even have to ride to join.
00:17:05.590 --> 00:17:07.074
You can just come drink with us afterwards.
00:17:07.074 --> 00:17:07.740
We're happy with that.
00:17:08.402 --> 00:17:22.086
Just driving in our area period Highway 17 is it feels like a death trap some days right and then when you get closer to the island we've got all the tourist traffic during high season it just feels like it can get super dangerous.
00:17:22.086 --> 00:17:31.432
So I'm wondering what kind of safety concerns do you typically face when you're riding, both when you're alone riding your bike, but also as that larger group.
00:17:32.440 --> 00:17:36.920
You know we try to do as much as we can as a group that educates people that we're out there.
00:17:37.079 --> 00:17:44.845
So on our Sunday rides we have warning riders ahead signs before and after the entrance of Salty Turtle, so we're at least notifying people.
00:17:44.845 --> 00:17:57.000
And then we, instead of riding out in mass in one huge group that's going to take up a longer period of time, we ride out in smaller groups so that again we can let more traffic go through, et cetera.
00:17:57.000 --> 00:18:07.454
Because what happens is, even though again we can get on the road and be on the side of the road and people could still get by just fine, they don't and thank you for being cautious, but we don't want to.
00:18:07.454 --> 00:18:10.603
Our goal isn't to impede traffic, our goal is to be in the flow of the road.
00:18:10.603 --> 00:18:17.010
So we'll get there and we'll release in smaller groups intentionally so that there's not this mass blocking traffic.
00:18:17.010 --> 00:18:25.913
When we do have our big events like Haunted 100 that I know we'll talk about in a little bit, we pay Surf City Police overtime and do police efforts and escorts and blockage.
00:18:25.913 --> 00:18:31.259
We do all of the things to keep riders and drivers as safe as possible.
