00:01:42.519 --> 00:01:45.120
Hello everyone and welcome to Topsail Insider.
00:01:45.120 --> 00:01:53.459
My name is Christa and I am your co host because today I have Trudy Solomon sitting in with me and we are going to be interviewing Kathy Mayles.
00:01:53.719 --> 00:01:56.219
She is the owner of Sea Green Natural Cleaning.
00:01:56.730 --> 00:01:58.129
All right, let's get to this.
00:01:58.400 --> 00:01:59.950
Yes, I'm so happy to be here.
00:01:59.950 --> 00:02:00.709
Thanks Kathy.
00:02:00.709 --> 00:02:00.894
Thanks Trudy.
00:02:01.295 --> 00:02:09.685
I want you to start out by telling the listeners exactly what Seagreen Natural Cleaning does and why you stand out from other cleaning companies.
00:02:10.465 --> 00:02:11.485
Absolutely.
00:02:11.564 --> 00:02:14.324
I got my start when I was 11 years old.
00:02:14.324 --> 00:02:20.615
My parents had rentals in Connecticut and when I wasn't doing gymnastics, my parents taught me.
00:02:21.085 --> 00:02:27.354
All facets of the business from cleaning to managing a business at 11 years old.
00:02:27.544 --> 00:02:28.675
What business did they have?
00:02:28.944 --> 00:02:32.965
So my parents had a business called Madison Cabins.
00:02:33.094 --> 00:02:37.034
So they had six summer cottages and three year round.
00:02:37.525 --> 00:02:46.344
So when my parents got me involved in their business, I learned a lot about, operating a business and my mom coming from a nursing background.
00:02:46.354 --> 00:02:47.685
We use Pine Saw.
00:02:48.129 --> 00:02:52.360
And we also used Spick and Span and products like that.
00:02:52.379 --> 00:02:59.150
And over time they started irritating my skin and causing respiratory problems with me.
00:02:59.664 --> 00:03:07.715
So from that point on, I started educating myself about different products, what's healthy, for me.
00:03:07.745 --> 00:03:09.824
And I saw a difference with my skin.
00:03:09.824 --> 00:03:11.905
I saw a difference with my breathing.
00:03:11.955 --> 00:03:22.275
And so that's what started the movement on, me using natural products and offering to those natural products to clients.
00:03:22.775 --> 00:03:25.215
We make all of our own cleaning products.
00:03:25.264 --> 00:03:34.025
in addition to that, I feel that we are a company that educates homeowners about toxicities in their homes, like mothballs.
00:03:34.435 --> 00:03:37.775
off gassing as far as materials on carpets.
00:03:37.835 --> 00:03:46.625
so when we go into a family's home, we always educate them about staying away, from certain chemicals because it causes cancer.
00:03:47.245 --> 00:03:50.284
you've mentioned some things that I'm interested in knowing a little bit more about.
00:03:50.294 --> 00:03:52.025
So you mentioned you're from Connecticut.
00:03:52.145 --> 00:03:53.235
So I want to hear about that.
00:03:53.235 --> 00:03:57.104
And of course, how you got here because your business is here.
00:03:57.504 --> 00:04:00.854
And then, you mentioned some things you did when you were younger, gymnastics and things too.
00:04:00.854 --> 00:04:02.504
So I'm sure there's some other stories to come.
00:04:02.504 --> 00:04:03.284
So tell us more.
00:04:04.020 --> 00:04:22.644
At the young age of 11, I started doing gymnastics and I was self taught and then I started, my parents really couldn't afford lessons and then I started eventually, having lessons and I progressed and I started getting really popular for gymnastics and started doing really well.
00:04:23.074 --> 00:04:40.504
Connecticut, we lived on the shoreline it's a beautiful ocean area and that's, I was brought up through learning on how to recycle and taking care of our environment so that's also, with that kind of background, I am using that for my business today.
00:04:41.204 --> 00:04:43.754
How far did you take the gymnastics?
00:04:44.404 --> 00:04:51.285
I went to Southern Connecticut State University because the Olympic coach was there, for the men's gymnastic team.
00:04:51.654 --> 00:04:56.404
And the women's team was quite popular, so I chose to go to Southern.
00:04:56.435 --> 00:04:59.004
I got accepted to Southern for that.
00:04:59.514 --> 00:05:05.875
And in 1983 at our nationals in Denver, Colorado, I came in 10th in the United States.
00:05:06.125 --> 00:05:09.538
Whoa! Wow! Kebby! That's huge! Yeah, I'm excited.
00:05:09.538 --> 00:05:11.221
you've been pretty athletic your entire life.
00:05:11.230 --> 00:05:11.290
Thank you.
00:05:12.050 --> 00:05:14.971
Yes, I'm definitely, I enjoy the outside.
00:05:14.971 --> 00:05:17.560
I'm very passionate about the environment.
00:05:17.600 --> 00:05:21.430
It's just brings on a whole different amount of energy to me.
00:05:22.321 --> 00:05:28.831
Enjoying, I get emotional with the sun and the moon and just nature itself.
00:05:29.250 --> 00:05:31.370
I see two big themes here with you already.
00:05:31.560 --> 00:05:35.300
I see, your passion for the environment and taking care of that.
00:05:35.391 --> 00:05:41.290
And I can imagine you've got stories to share with us about chemicals more than just recycling, right?
00:05:41.300 --> 00:05:43.670
And then also how this ties in with your health.
00:05:44.081 --> 00:05:46.420
Tell us more about like your own health journey.
00:05:46.440 --> 00:05:52.980
And like you had some, skin irritations or things like that when you were young, but then you were also like an athlete.
00:05:52.980 --> 00:05:56.721
So tell us about that and how it's fed into your business.
00:05:57.425 --> 00:06:22.925
what people don't realize is when you're using store bought, cleaners for all purpose cleaners or multi purpose cleaners, that when you are spraying those products, those molecules go into the air and they collect on furniture and also on your body and an experiment that you can do is when you're spraying something, all you have to do is lick your skin and your skin is the most absorbent organ of your body.
00:06:23.446 --> 00:06:39.175
And so I noticed that when I was using like the PineSaw and Tilex and all those other cleaners is that I could feel it on my skin and I usually wear a short sleeve shirt when we're working.
00:06:39.625 --> 00:06:47.526
So that's an indication right there that, Anything that's going through the air is going to land somewhere and it's going to land on your body as well.
00:06:48.096 --> 00:06:58.536
So it causes skin irritations and if you use the product and if you're exposed to it in a non ventilated area, it could probably go to your liver as well.
00:06:58.795 --> 00:06:59.156
Wow.
00:06:59.206 --> 00:07:01.745
And start causing liver problems.
00:07:01.906 --> 00:07:02.266
Yeah.
00:07:02.565 --> 00:07:09.365
So you've actually worked with people to help them remedy some concerns that they probably didn't even understand.
00:07:09.795 --> 00:07:10.526
Absolutely.
00:07:10.526 --> 00:07:26.565
So my passion is working with people that are, cancer survivors or they're going through chemotherapy right now, lupus, MS, the common illnesses to educate them about making healthier choices for their homes for products.
00:07:27.206 --> 00:07:30.786
So let's go back to, you lived on the coast up in Connecticut and now you're here in our coast.
00:07:30.795 --> 00:07:31.696
So how'd you come here?
00:07:32.266 --> 00:07:37.725
So I've had the opportunity to have two successful businesses while I was in Connecticut.
00:07:37.786 --> 00:07:51.855
I started the cleaning business in 1984 and that was the same year that my now ex husband and I bought a boatyard marina, which was a very successful boatyard marina in Madison, Connecticut.
00:07:51.875 --> 00:07:55.355
We only had 30 slips and we were one of the top 10 marinas.
00:07:55.620 --> 00:08:01.891
In the state of Connecticut, we were, a Mako dealer, Johnson Everud, and various other boat lines.
00:08:02.310 --> 00:08:11.630
I'm very passionate about the boating industry, and that's what brought me to Wilmington because of the richness of the history, and I enjoy boating.
00:08:11.630 --> 00:08:14.511
How is boating playing into your life now?
00:08:15.011 --> 00:08:20.401
I'm on the Wrightsville Beach Outrigger Team, and we're out on the water all the time.
00:08:20.831 --> 00:08:22.190
Tell me more about that.
00:08:22.221 --> 00:08:23.290
That sounds interesting.
00:08:23.600 --> 00:08:26.110
we're a very competitive club.
00:08:26.151 --> 00:08:29.810
We've been traveling all over the United States now.
00:08:29.901 --> 00:08:32.660
I think we have 118 members.
00:08:33.000 --> 00:08:36.041
we give, give back a lot to the community.
00:08:36.041 --> 00:08:37.660
We do beach cleanups.
00:08:37.711 --> 00:08:41.360
We do fundraisers for battered women.
00:08:41.890 --> 00:08:43.020
we do beach cleaning.
00:08:43.280 --> 00:08:50.620
like last year when we did the Latilla, all the money, that we won the People's Choice Award, all the money went to Maui.
00:08:51.020 --> 00:08:54.280
So this year we're hoping to get the People's Choice Award again.
00:08:54.321 --> 00:08:56.931
All the money is going to go to Western North Carolina.
00:08:57.071 --> 00:08:57.610
Wow.
00:08:57.760 --> 00:08:58.051
Okay.
00:08:58.051 --> 00:08:59.020
How long have you been doing that?
00:08:59.500 --> 00:09:01.610
I've been, paddling for four years.
00:09:01.900 --> 00:09:04.650
Okay, and are you in a lot of competitions?
00:09:04.650 --> 00:09:06.471
Have you gotten a lot of awards?
00:09:06.471 --> 00:09:07.120
How'd you, I don't know.
00:09:07.120 --> 00:09:08.201
Tell us a little bit more about that.
00:09:08.201 --> 00:09:08.900
I haven't paddled.
00:09:09.610 --> 00:09:16.850
I'm a hardcore competitive person and anything that I do, whether it's my business or, sports.
00:09:17.355 --> 00:09:19.666
And this year I've done five races.
00:09:19.696 --> 00:09:21.696
I did, Chattajack.
00:09:21.706 --> 00:09:25.385
It's a Tennessee race, 32 miles nonstop.
00:09:25.436 --> 00:09:26.645
It took us five miles.
00:09:26.645 --> 00:09:27.655
We came in fifth.
00:09:27.765 --> 00:09:29.615
That was our first time we did that race.
00:09:30.176 --> 00:09:37.395
And then I went to Miami and did a nine mile race with a all women's team that I didn't know from Pennsylvania.
00:09:37.895 --> 00:09:43.385
So other teams across the United States is reaching out to me because, they want me on their team.
00:09:43.426 --> 00:09:43.985
That's good.
00:09:43.995 --> 00:09:48.115
You have a lot of discipline besides the passion that you keep talking about.
00:09:48.365 --> 00:09:49.775
You're passionate about the environment.
00:09:49.775 --> 00:09:52.076
You're passionate about, just a clean.
00:09:53.225 --> 00:09:57.596
Clean living, and now you're, you're also sharing how disciplined you are.
00:09:57.596 --> 00:10:00.525
That takes a lot of practice, doesn't it, to, to be on a team like that?
00:10:01.135 --> 00:10:02.196
Definitely does.
00:10:02.216 --> 00:10:06.296
I have to go to the gym so I can keep up with the younger people on the team.
00:10:07.571 --> 00:10:08.600
you mentioned your premature.
00:10:08.600 --> 00:10:12.280
And so I bet that really did contribute to breathing issues.
00:10:12.280 --> 00:10:18.620
And so you talked about that with some of the chemicals you were around and then you've made us aware of how these things get on our skin.
00:10:19.051 --> 00:10:25.360
I'm already concerned about several things now, but and you've got these lovely, clients that you're helping with their health issues and things.
00:10:25.650 --> 00:10:34.056
And then I even think about how, Even people without the health concerns, something's real specific like cancer or lupus, like you mentioned.
00:10:34.296 --> 00:10:39.605
but then we, how we got a little bit more aware of our environment when COVID came along too.
00:10:39.926 --> 00:10:42.765
So tell me more about your business today and how you're doing.
00:10:43.025 --> 00:11:01.206
Giving people peace of mind and how you know so much about what you know, so I'm a research fanatic If there's a topic when customers come to me and they have questions about certain products if I don't have the answer I will find the answer and I do a lot of fact checking.
00:11:01.725 --> 00:11:09.461
I'm very passionate about that My ultimate goal is to educate everyone about how we can make better choices in our home.
00:11:09.841 --> 00:11:11.451
How are we infecting the environment?
00:11:11.941 --> 00:11:14.971
things as simple as I'm a contact wear.
00:11:15.221 --> 00:11:31.870
And, so now some local eye doctors actually are starting to recycle those, but people have no idea on how just disposing of your contacts is polluting our oceans tremendously causing microplastics.
00:11:31.870 --> 00:11:32.110
Thanks.
00:11:32.780 --> 00:11:44.461
And so now I doctors are starting to get wise with this with the bubble packs and also the contacts on how to recycle those and saving the environment.
00:11:44.520 --> 00:11:49.500
Also too, I enjoy working with the North Carolina Coastal Federation.
00:11:49.551 --> 00:11:55.451
they're educating me a lot on the environment as well, as far as like recycling oyster shells.
00:11:56.100 --> 00:12:00.410
so people don't, they want to throw them away, but they can actually spawn.
00:12:00.900 --> 00:12:04.441
And, so that's really, that's helping the environment as well.
00:12:04.791 --> 00:12:08.191
And simple things too is like recycling hair.
00:12:08.221 --> 00:12:15.360
There's a company in California after the big oil, I think it was Deep Water Horizon oil spill.
00:12:15.625 --> 00:12:23.405
There's a company in California that will recycle human hair and also pet hair and they make oil booms from those.
00:12:23.706 --> 00:12:34.125
So you can just send, so local hair salons can send when they sweep up all that hair so that hair can be recycled and used for oil booms.
00:12:34.436 --> 00:12:42.326
Yeah, you're teaching us a lot about things that we can, that we all use and that how we can certainly dispose of them differently.
00:12:42.696 --> 00:12:50.605
to not cause any more harm than we've already caused, but you're also teaching us about things that we shouldn't use because they're causing harm to us directly.
00:12:50.885 --> 00:12:51.916
So I appreciate that.
00:12:51.926 --> 00:12:58.875
So if there's a person out there who's listening and they're interested in talking to you about your services, talk to me about what those are.
00:12:58.946 --> 00:12:59.995
Who do you get out there and help?
00:13:00.005 --> 00:13:01.275
What kind of services do you offer?
00:13:02.005 --> 00:13:04.635
So we are residential cleaners.
00:13:04.655 --> 00:13:07.475
We do not do commercial cleaning at this time.
00:13:07.485 --> 00:13:12.105
We do, we do a lot of Airbnbs from Wrightsville Beach all the way to Topsail.
00:13:12.995 --> 00:13:17.706
We do move out cleans, move in cleans, deep cleans.
00:13:18.245 --> 00:13:20.285
Just basic residential cleaning.
00:13:20.285 --> 00:13:21.355
Do you do new construction?
00:13:21.456 --> 00:13:23.275
We do new construction cleaning.
00:13:23.285 --> 00:13:29.365
We do a lot of work for a builder in Wilmington that does a lot of houses on Figure 8 Island.
00:13:29.395 --> 00:13:29.855
Okay.
00:13:29.985 --> 00:13:35.505
So you do some things that are just a one, one and done, but you do, you help some people regularly and go back and help them.
00:13:35.505 --> 00:13:35.855
Yes.
00:13:36.005 --> 00:13:50.846
Yeah, so tell us about some of those experiences and what you've helped people accomplish or just even I think about the rentals, and people who are coming in, there's all kinds of, there's a different person coming in every week with a different probably set of health concerns and things like that.
00:13:50.865 --> 00:13:56.235
So with so many different people coming through those rental units and you're not using borax.
00:13:56.475 --> 00:13:59.346
What are you using to take care of the disinfecting?
00:13:59.635 --> 00:14:03.686
So we use vinegar diluted with water.
00:14:03.846 --> 00:14:15.306
I blog about this because if you're not careful, the acidity of vinegar will destroy materials such as granite and marble and corian tops.
00:14:15.586 --> 00:14:17.566
And also it will destroy floors.
00:14:17.576 --> 00:14:20.365
So my theory is less is more.
00:14:20.365 --> 00:14:21.556
You don't need a lot.
00:14:22.765 --> 00:14:25.515
Vinegar is a good disinfectant as well.
00:14:25.975 --> 00:14:31.625
sometimes if I have a leftover lemon or orange, you can use that for disinfecting.
00:14:31.796 --> 00:14:33.306
Anything that's acidic.
00:14:33.306 --> 00:14:42.446
So if you're wanting to have that nice, fresh smell, we do not use, any scents at all because a lot of people are very sensitive to that.
00:14:42.456 --> 00:14:45.086
So everything that we use is unscented.
00:14:45.535 --> 00:14:50.285
And because we don't use a lot of vinegar, you don't have that offensive smell.
00:14:50.905 --> 00:14:54.525
And vinegar is very much like alcohol, rubbing alcohol.
00:14:54.525 --> 00:15:02.571
It does dissipate over time, but if you use a lot of vinegar, yes, it's going to be, it's not going to be, enjoyable to smell.
00:15:02.711 --> 00:15:04.301
Do you use alcohol as well?
00:15:04.400 --> 00:15:05.880
You can use rubbing alcohol.
00:15:05.880 --> 00:15:07.390
You can use witch hazel.
00:15:07.390 --> 00:15:09.971
You can use hydrogen peroxide.
00:15:10.140 --> 00:15:14.551
We had a lot of mold issues in our Airbnbs this summer and last summer.
00:15:14.610 --> 00:15:17.010
I'm not a mold restoration company.
00:15:17.321 --> 00:15:20.520
If it's just a little bit of mold, we use hydrogen peroxide.
00:15:20.520 --> 00:15:24.211
You do not want to use bleach because bleach is only a whitener.
00:15:25.660 --> 00:15:27.971
And you can use vinegar, too, in your laundry.
00:15:28.471 --> 00:15:38.390
and you said you got, you mix these chemicals up or you mix these products up and you bring them into the home for you so that you've got it figured out of what ratio and things like that, too.
00:15:38.390 --> 00:15:44.673
And I know a lot of people who, They're used to walking in their home and smelling the Clorox and feel like, yay, my house is clean.
00:15:45.543 --> 00:15:45.682
That's true.
00:15:45.932 --> 00:15:46.173
Guilty.
00:15:47.472 --> 00:15:50.942
but I'm not sure I want to walk in and smell a lot of vinegar either, so you've thought about that.
00:15:50.942 --> 00:15:59.482
But yeah, I think about how people are sensitive to lots of scents and Clorox, even though it smells clean, it's probably doing some damage somewhere.
00:15:59.883 --> 00:16:02.552
So and, but then I really want to pre, I appreciate this too.
00:16:03.082 --> 00:16:08.663
You've all these hats that you've worn all these years at your parents place and at the marina and all that.
00:16:09.192 --> 00:16:18.974
Sounds like you've learned a lot about the surfaces too, but we've spent a ton of money on the finishes in our home and we don't realize the damage that we're doing to some of them over time with some of those chemicals too.
00:16:18.974 --> 00:16:22.004
So you mentioned that you've blogged about this.
00:16:22.094 --> 00:16:23.653
I got to find your blog.
00:16:24.063 --> 00:16:24.494
Tell me.
00:16:25.083 --> 00:16:29.953
So you can find all of our blogs on our website, Sea Green Natural Cleaning.
00:16:30.494 --> 00:16:39.333
All of my blogs are written from the heart, but also fact checked, and it's all experiences that we come across in people's homes.
00:16:39.823 --> 00:16:55.374
the commercial industry's done a fantastic job programming all of this, that the scents that we smell is, such as like eucalyptus or pine or lavender is all those scents that they use.
00:16:55.374 --> 00:16:59.844
People have no idea it's called greenwashing and whitewashing.
00:17:00.224 --> 00:17:02.224
That's masking the chemical smell.
00:17:02.224 --> 00:17:11.743
So All my clients, I recommend for them, it's a tool, it's a government run website, it's called ewg.
00:17:11.804 --> 00:17:12.203
org.
00:17:12.213 --> 00:17:12.993
Oh, I've heard of that.
00:17:13.023 --> 00:17:32.243
And any product that you want to purchase, whether it's a baby product, a product for your dog, a product for your skin, or a product that you want to use for cleaning, such as Meyers or 7th Generation, there's chemicals in those, that they do a rating on every single one of those products.
00:17:32.778 --> 00:17:38.868
And it'll tell you if it causes respiratory problems, if it causes, skin, allergies.
00:17:38.939 --> 00:17:39.749
I'll be going there.
00:17:39.759 --> 00:17:42.009
and it'll give you a report card.
00:17:42.028 --> 00:17:47.423
And again, but it's a government run, so you have to do your own homework and I worried about that.
00:17:47.604 --> 00:17:51.383
Is it, I think it's Environmental Working Group is the EWG part.
00:17:51.384 --> 00:17:57.324
And I've used it to look up sunscreens and such, but I, but there's a lot you really should reference there.
00:17:57.503 --> 00:17:59.743
And I guess what you're saying, it's one reference.
00:18:00.023 --> 00:18:00.423
Correct.
00:18:00.584 --> 00:18:03.544
But it's one place to start and get some information.
00:18:03.743 --> 00:18:05.144
Just go there and search a product.
00:18:05.364 --> 00:18:06.584
I have an app too.
00:18:06.814 --> 00:18:07.374
Oh, really?
00:18:07.453 --> 00:18:07.773
Yeah.
00:18:08.163 --> 00:18:09.993
you can scan bwg.
00:18:09.993 --> 00:18:10.023
com.
00:18:10.023 --> 00:18:12.273
But they have an app and you can scan barcodes when you're in store.
00:18:12.273 --> 00:18:13.433
Is it dot com or dot org?
00:18:13.534 --> 00:18:14.193
dot org.
00:18:14.203 --> 00:18:14.834
Dot org.
00:18:15.134 --> 00:18:16.844
And then you can get the app too.
00:18:16.874 --> 00:18:17.253
and look.
00:18:17.314 --> 00:18:18.104
and that is good.
00:18:18.503 --> 00:18:26.604
I love what you do for clients Who have a compromise of some type with their health, but we all need to be conscious of what we're doing to our bodies.
00:18:26.604 --> 00:18:30.403
And we have, but you've had to learn a lot about the, these industries.
00:18:30.483 --> 00:18:34.403
So tell me a little bit about, and you've put some of that information on your, in your blog?
00:18:34.719 --> 00:18:43.729
So is when I come across websites like that, I always share it on our blog about it, but also to, take it one step further.
00:18:43.729 --> 00:18:45.788
We have to really educate ourselves.
00:18:45.838 --> 00:18:50.318
If there are words on the bottle that you can't even pronounce.
00:18:51.243 --> 00:19:03.834
I research every ingredient and see exactly what it's derived of, if it's plant based or if it's just some random chemical like formaldehyde, like Mr.
00:19:03.834 --> 00:19:04.693
Clean sponges.
00:19:04.693 --> 00:19:05.913
We don't even use Mr.
00:19:05.913 --> 00:19:11.394
Clean sponges in the industry because there's formaldehyde in Mr.
00:19:11.394 --> 00:19:12.354
Clean sponges.
00:19:12.443 --> 00:19:13.703
I use those all the time.
00:19:14.314 --> 00:19:16.564
And technically, if you do use a Mr.
00:19:16.564 --> 00:19:21.304
Clean sponge, you are supposed to be Rubber gloves to protect your skin.
00:19:21.493 --> 00:19:27.554
Okay, so I was about to ask you, was there any products that just shocked you when you learned about how bad they were for us?
00:19:27.554 --> 00:19:32.213
So that way, is there any others that we should really be careful with?
00:19:32.263 --> 00:19:32.963
Immediately.
00:19:33.074 --> 00:19:33.304
Yes.
00:19:34.693 --> 00:19:40.253
I pretty much literally almost die when I walk into people's homes that have the plug ins.
00:19:40.773 --> 00:19:41.243
Yes.
00:19:41.324 --> 00:19:41.933
Oh, really?
00:19:41.943 --> 00:19:43.523
I was gonna, I was thinking about that.
00:19:43.534 --> 00:19:49.463
The air fresheners, the candles and things, those are things that are putting chemicals in our air, in our home, right?
00:19:49.564 --> 00:19:50.433
I love.
00:19:51.118 --> 00:19:52.108
Perfume smells.
00:19:52.138 --> 00:19:52.378
Yeah.
00:19:52.378 --> 00:19:53.939
I love Yankee Candle.
00:19:54.019 --> 00:19:54.949
I love, bath.
00:19:55.128 --> 00:19:56.209
Bath and Body Works.
00:19:56.209 --> 00:19:57.858
But what about the little melty things?
00:19:57.858 --> 00:20:01.249
The little, the little lamps that you plug in Sensei?
00:20:01.278 --> 00:20:01.429
Yeah.
00:20:01.429 --> 00:20:02.878
What a, are you gonna tell me?
00:20:02.878 --> 00:20:04.558
I can't, you have to be really careful.
00:20:05.199 --> 00:20:06.439
That's why I blog about this.
00:20:06.439 --> 00:20:08.778
You have to be really careful about that.
00:20:09.098 --> 00:20:13.098
Even essential oils, that's why I figured we were going there too.
00:20:13.148 --> 00:20:15.858
So essential oils, there's some, it's on my blog.
00:20:15.868 --> 00:20:22.058
Some essential oils are, will kill a dog and some essential oils will kill a cat.
00:20:22.078 --> 00:20:24.929
So that's why I have, in my blog about that.
00:20:25.433 --> 00:20:26.334
Here's an example.
00:20:26.334 --> 00:20:38.273
I had a golden retriever and at nighttime he would sleep in my bedroom and on my nightstand I had a diffuser and I had, I can't remember the essential oil I had in there.
00:20:38.284 --> 00:20:45.923
He started becoming lethargic and he was only seven or eight years old at the time and I said, oh no, what's going on with him?
00:20:46.354 --> 00:20:51.903
So I plugged in the symptoms on how he was behaving and sure enough, it was the particular.
00:20:52.169 --> 00:20:56.358
Essential oil that I put in my diffuser that was making him sick.
00:20:56.548 --> 00:20:57.798
Wow, that's incredible.
00:20:58.189 --> 00:20:59.308
Did you blog about that?
00:20:59.328 --> 00:21:01.318
Yes, how long have you done this blog?
00:21:01.479 --> 00:21:02.689
So I've been blogging.
00:21:02.719 --> 00:21:18.483
I think I started blogging around 2007 maybe it was 2009 so I have a lot of information all the information out there from bugs I've had I had a client or I still have a client on figure eight island.
00:21:18.483 --> 00:21:27.364
She's got these gorgeous long drapes and she has a, an, an exterminator that comes monthly, but she has those little hoppy, spiders.
00:21:27.824 --> 00:21:35.743
So what I've done is in my blogs, for factuals, I will actually go to, I went to a pest elimination company in Wilmington.
00:21:35.973 --> 00:21:43.814
They're the experts and I interviewed them about why she has these spiders and I learned a lot about spiders.
00:21:44.173 --> 00:21:45.903
what does that have to do with cleaning?
00:21:45.903 --> 00:21:50.993
It's an experience that I have in a house and I just felt that other people would like to be educated about that.
00:21:51.874 --> 00:21:54.733
I just want to say where you can go find the blog.
00:21:54.753 --> 00:21:58.634
you go to your website site which is cgreennaturalcleaning.
00:21:58.673 --> 00:22:04.054
com it's S E A, green natural cleaning and then you go under the insights and tips.
00:22:04.669 --> 00:22:07.179
Tab or page in your blog there.
00:22:07.179 --> 00:22:08.378
What do you think that most?
00:22:08.429 --> 00:22:09.489
What do you think that is the most?
00:22:10.223 --> 00:22:11.213
Hit on articles.
00:22:11.703 --> 00:22:22.594
So I came across purple shampoo in a shower and blondes use purple shampoo from their salon but it does stain the showers.
00:22:23.134 --> 00:22:30.423
So I did a blog on how to remove that and that was one of my most popular blogs.
00:22:30.423 --> 00:22:33.493
I had thousands and thousands of people going to that.
00:22:33.864 --> 00:22:37.773
Another blog that was a popular blog was the spray tan.
00:22:38.179 --> 00:22:40.538
Spray tan all over the toilet seats.
00:22:40.538 --> 00:22:45.459
You spray it and then it goes everywhere else.
00:22:45.959 --> 00:22:51.409
So that was another popular blog and also the essential oils for the pets.
00:22:52.338 --> 00:22:56.538
So you're not just taking care of these homes and the pets, you're taking care of the people.
00:22:56.538 --> 00:22:56.878
Yeah.
00:22:56.878 --> 00:23:02.009
that's just a huge, you're, it's a wide array of care that you're providing.
00:23:02.358 --> 00:23:02.919
Love that.
00:23:03.088 --> 00:23:12.318
If somebody wants to, they hire you to come in, you're cleaning with natural products, you teach them, you're teaching them while you're there about the natural products that you're using.
00:23:12.568 --> 00:23:14.078
Does the blog indicate that?
00:23:14.334 --> 00:23:16.884
ratios that we could start using in our home right away.
00:23:17.584 --> 00:23:26.733
So I'm working on a book right now that's going to have recipes in it as well as educating people about the environment on how we can give back to our communities.
00:23:27.084 --> 00:23:28.423
Tell us about your book.
00:23:28.453 --> 00:23:28.993
Let's hear it.
00:23:29.874 --> 00:23:31.134
So I'm super excited.
00:23:31.134 --> 00:23:33.554
People ask me that question all the time.
00:23:33.604 --> 00:23:41.453
I just did a talk at one of our networking groups and I had a magnet, a little teaser, a little magnet to do the ratios.
00:23:41.834 --> 00:23:44.074
for making the vinegar solution.
00:23:44.374 --> 00:23:45.294
Make it easy for us.
00:23:45.294 --> 00:23:45.683
Thank you.
00:23:45.683 --> 00:23:46.104
Yes.
00:23:47.394 --> 00:23:51.403
And, I'm not sure, over the winter time, I'm definitely going to be working on a book more.
00:23:51.413 --> 00:23:53.483
I have 170 pages already.
00:23:53.544 --> 00:23:53.864
Wow.
00:23:53.913 --> 00:23:54.713
That's amazing, Kathy.
00:23:54.713 --> 00:23:55.233
I'm impressed.
00:23:55.253 --> 00:23:57.294
With your discipline, I'm sure you'll knock it out.
00:23:58.023 --> 00:23:59.263
I can't wait for it to come out.
00:23:59.273 --> 00:23:59.814
I know.
00:23:59.874 --> 00:24:01.423
I want it to be fun.
00:24:01.433 --> 00:24:01.453
Yeah.
00:24:01.713 --> 00:24:06.074
I want it to, I want people to, be looking forward to the next, oh, what can I do?
00:24:06.284 --> 00:24:06.483
Yeah.
00:24:06.483 --> 00:24:07.634
I want it to be a fun book.
00:24:07.733 --> 00:24:11.483
with everything being so natural and healthy or not.
00:24:11.709 --> 00:24:13.439
we've made it, we've made it unnatural.
00:24:13.449 --> 00:24:14.179
that's what we've done.
00:24:14.189 --> 00:24:16.179
We've created all these products and things.
00:24:16.249 --> 00:24:18.269
But you keep getting the kids involved in this too.
00:24:18.749 --> 00:24:22.239
the kids love, my kids love mixing and doing like little chemistry things.
00:24:22.239 --> 00:24:23.169
Science experiments.
00:24:23.169 --> 00:24:24.159
Yes, totally.
00:24:24.588 --> 00:24:29.858
if we have this book and they're like, I need you guys to mix, make our ratios this week, I think they would be all over that.
00:24:29.858 --> 00:24:31.628
As long as they don't, blow on the wrong thing.
00:24:32.628 --> 00:24:33.699
They probably do that on purpose.
00:24:33.719 --> 00:24:34.608
I know, that's true.
00:24:35.019 --> 00:24:35.388
Yeah.
00:24:35.709 --> 00:24:37.419
Yeah, that's wonderful information.
00:24:37.429 --> 00:24:40.019
So tell us about, do you have a team of people?
00:24:40.038 --> 00:24:41.148
How is that working for you?
00:24:41.348 --> 00:24:43.618
we have a few people that are working for us.
00:24:43.618 --> 00:25:01.469
We're always looking to hire the right people for the right fit because a lot of people, again, they're programmed to using chemicals, so when they are introduced to the natural stuff, They are questionable whether they actually work and I get asked this all the time by new clients, but do they work?
00:25:02.118 --> 00:25:05.858
And of course they do work or I wouldn't be in business.
00:25:05.999 --> 00:25:10.028
So I educate all our cleaners what I expect from them.
00:25:10.028 --> 00:25:11.169
I have high standards.
00:25:11.169 --> 00:25:20.159
We have a five star rating and I don't want to compromise that, but just teaching them I use all I have natural Swiffers that can be washed.
00:25:20.548 --> 00:25:24.269
When we go into that, houses, we have no waste whatsoever.
00:25:24.669 --> 00:25:29.588
We try to reduce our carbon footprint too, so meaning we're very efficient.
00:25:29.628 --> 00:25:32.419
Our caddies are set up identical.
00:25:32.628 --> 00:25:34.739
We come in with cotton rags.
00:25:34.739 --> 00:25:41.669
We come in with microfiber rags, with laundry bags, so there's no cross contamination after we use a rag.
00:25:41.669 --> 00:25:43.548
It goes right into the laundry bag.
00:25:44.138 --> 00:25:53.189
So we're working on building our teams right now because we're covering a big area of the state now and more and more people are requesting our services.
00:25:53.439 --> 00:25:54.959
Are you hiring by any chance?
00:25:55.558 --> 00:25:55.959
Yes.
00:25:56.259 --> 00:25:58.278
How can someone reach out to you if they're interested?
00:25:58.773 --> 00:26:05.624
They can reach out to, on our website or they can, my phone number is on the website, they can text me.
00:26:06.253 --> 00:26:10.544
How long has Sea Green Natural Cleaning been around and what do you see for the future of it?
00:26:11.263 --> 00:26:19.054
I officially started under the Sea Green name, I think it was in 2007 or 2005.
00:26:20.693 --> 00:26:26.209
And my ultimate goal is I have a lot of Plans and ideas.
00:26:26.209 --> 00:26:27.939
I'm not sure if I'm in a franchise.
00:26:28.449 --> 00:26:33.608
I just want to continue this movement on making our environment healthier.
00:26:34.068 --> 00:26:35.979
I appreciate you're doing that here in our town.
00:26:36.828 --> 00:26:38.239
Because you're impacting the environment.
00:26:38.239 --> 00:26:41.509
Yeah, you're impacting the environment too, not just each home.
00:26:42.098 --> 00:26:46.459
person that you're helping with their experience and this how they live and breathe in their own homes.
00:26:46.469 --> 00:26:47.608
So thank you for that.
00:26:47.949 --> 00:26:51.239
So wrapping up, what are your final thoughts on what you want people to know?
00:26:51.298 --> 00:26:52.898
there's people listening, there's someone listening right now.
00:26:52.898 --> 00:26:53.709
What do you want them to hear?
00:26:54.318 --> 00:27:00.689
There's a difference between hire an experienced person versus someone that's just getting into the industry.
00:27:00.759 --> 00:27:04.838
For me, there's more than just cleaning when we come to the home.
00:27:05.384 --> 00:27:07.173
We document everything.
00:27:07.183 --> 00:27:14.354
We bring awareness to the homeowner, whether it's a ding in a wall or if there's, mold is a big thing.
00:27:14.874 --> 00:27:16.584
So it's not just about cleaning.
00:27:16.584 --> 00:27:19.534
It's about educating that people that want to hire us.
00:27:20.193 --> 00:27:31.023
you're really caring for these homes, a lot like it's your own home, and you're, you're there, you're breathing it too, and you don't want to do any damage to yourself, but you're also looking out for that homeowner in, in lots of different ways.
00:27:31.023 --> 00:27:31.894
I appreciate that.
00:27:32.423 --> 00:27:35.614
What do you want us to know about how we can go out and care for the environment today?
00:27:36.324 --> 00:27:37.185
that's a big question.
00:27:37.185 --> 00:27:38.048
That's a big question.
00:27:38.048 --> 00:27:38.604
I know.
00:27:38.653 --> 00:27:39.074
I know.
00:27:39.074 --> 00:27:40.394
I don't wear contact lenses.
00:27:42.493 --> 00:27:44.114
Tell me something else I can do.
00:27:44.213 --> 00:27:58.183
I think that if we, start small, even like going through our closets and getting clothing that we don't use on a regular basis, give it to the Goodwills, always feng shui ing our house.
00:27:58.798 --> 00:28:17.419
and bring more of an awareness because we can't control what happens outside of our environment, but we can control what's in our environment and to take control of ourselves and to make mindful decisions when it comes to chemicals and always question, is this good for the environment?
00:28:17.769 --> 00:28:18.898
Is this good for me?
00:28:18.909 --> 00:28:20.419
Is this good for my family?
00:28:21.483 --> 00:28:24.624
You know what I notice is I just feel like you're focused on longevity.
00:28:24.834 --> 00:28:29.884
I think you're focused on longevity of life and longevity of our planet and I just love that.
00:28:30.044 --> 00:28:34.814
I think that's a beautiful message and I love the way that you've tied them together but you are living it.
00:28:34.874 --> 00:28:39.923
You are living it and you're helping us get it more educated and that's right out there on your website.
00:28:39.933 --> 00:28:43.634
That's wonderful and such a help to anybody who just takes a moment to go read.
00:28:44.048 --> 00:28:45.608
The thank you for all you shared on that.
00:28:45.999 --> 00:28:47.709
Let's go over the contact information.
